The wind over Salisbury Plain is legendary and its effects nowhere morebleakly observed than when newly weds William and Julia Morrison drove up to view the farm they were thinking of buying some eighteen years ago. Totally isolated apart from its three nearby shepherds’ cottages, it sat in a field surrounded by mud. There was no garden and Julia was first to notice what was sadly lacking. ‘There were no trees or hedgerows and not a sound of a bird anywhere. It was very bleak and inhospitable with asbestos ceilings and no old stone floors, it had been ‘modernised’ in the 1960’s, with old stone floors removed and all else that implies.
